The Mahj Derby - For Education
Friday, May 8 - Join us for a friendly derby themed tournament to raise money for education.
Service Description
Join us at Seasons 52 in Coral Gables, for a derby-styled afternoon of mahjong and lunch bites while playing to raise funds for your favorite school or education non-profit. Register as part of a school or for Breakthrough Miami and your score for the afternoon will go toward your selected school/organization. The school/organization with the highest score when the rounds end, will receive a percentage of the proceeds from this event. The afternoon includes: full mahj set up (just bring your NMJL card, if you have one), scored social play, door prizes- receive an entry ticket for attending and for each mahj hand you win - lunch bites and a non-alcoholic drink, and other fun. This is a social play and all participants should generally know how to play American Mahjong. Brooke + Gabi will be there to offer rule clarifications and verify mahjong wins but no lesson or guided play is included. So grab your PTAs and start registering your teams. Derby attire is encouraged, but not required. School spirit gear is welcome, as well. At this friendly tournament style event we will be rotating tables every 30 minutes. *Newer Players, don't be intimidated - you can totally do this!* Mahj + Miami is an inclusive, friendly space, welcoming all players looking to connect over mahjong. This event requires a minimum of 24 people. If the minimum amount is not reached by April 22, the event will be cancelled and you will be refunded. This is an exclusive event and space is very limited so grab your seats fast! REMEMBER, the school/organization with the highest cumulative score wins the donation!

Cancellation Policy
At Mahj + Miami, every event is thoughtfully designed — from curating tables to styling every seat for a fun, fair, and fabulous experience. To keep the vibe smooth and respectful for all players, we kindly ask that you please review the following: 🔸 Cancellations We do not offer refunds for cancellations. If you cancel 48+ hours before an event, we’re happy to allow you to reschedule your spot at a future lesson/event of equal value (pending availability). This credit must be used within 60 days of the original event date, otherwise it will expire. ***Cancellations made within 48 hours of the event are non-refundable and not eligible for credit.*** Please understand that last-minute cancellations affect seating arrangements and disrupt the flow of the event for everyone. 🔸 Table Seating We do our best to accommodate seating preferences and aim to place all players at traditional 4-top tables. However: Due to unforeseen circumstances such as no-shows or last-minute cancellations, we may need to adjust the seating chart to ensure all players can be included. Depending on registration, some games may be played with less than 4 players. Occasionally, you may be seated at a larger communal table alongside another group of 4. While we strive to seat players of similar skill levels together, we can’t always guarantee perfect pairings — thank you for your flexibility and spirit of play! 🔸 Running Late Please arrive on time. If you're more than 15 minutes late, you may be asked to sit out that round to avoid interrupting gameplay. Your punctuality helps keep the table experience smooth for everyone. 🔸 Group Play Guidelines: Individual house rules do not apply. We follow the official guidelines of the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) to ensure consistency and fairness for all players. Please note that we do not use blank tiles or variations outside of NMJL rules. 🔸 End-of-Event Policy : We’ll provide a 15-minute notice before the event ends to allow for wrap-up. While you're welcome to stay and mingle, we kindly begin collecting and packing up all Mahj + Miami materials at that time - including tiles, racks, and mats. If you'd like to continue playing after the event, you’re welcome to bring your own tiles.
